telegram is an open source messaging app that is actually just as lightning fast as it claims, sending messages and files such as images/short videos/word docs near instantly, as well as full movies in [generally] around an hour

really impressive levels of encryption
im serious, the people behind this has offered $300,000 to anyone that can hack their way into seeing + decoding peoples messages

the list just keeps going on tbh
the most impressive things, i think, are their secret chats which are really useful for the more paranoid users. only you and the other person you’re messaging know your encryption code and there is an option for timed self destructing messages
also included is the ability to see and terminate any sessions with the app [aka you will know if anyone else has logged onto your account as well as that person’s IP and the platform theyre using to access it]
the only disappointing factor is that as of right now, there is no option for voice or video calling, as theyre focusing on secure messaging. they are considering it though, so that might still change
tl;dr ditch skype, sign up w telegram, have zero regrets about it
for those concerned about aesthetic issues since the main website page is offputting, this is what the actual app looks like
